Here's a list of foods even the experts won't eat...
The fisheries expert won’t eat farmed salmon. Dr. David Carpenter is the director for Health and the Environment at the University of Albany. He says that farmed salmon is fed soy, ground feathers, and poultry bedding contaminated with fecal matter, carcinogens, flame retardant, and pesticides. Dr. Carpenter also says your cancer risk jumps dramatically even if you eat farmed salmon just three times a year! The fix: Buy wild salmon caught off Alaska. Know this: If the package says “Fresh Atlantic Salmon” it’s farmed, because there’s no commercial salmon fishing in the Atlantic Ocean.
So, what won’t the endocrinologist eat? Canned tomatoes. Dr. Fredrick Vom Saal from the University of Missouri says tin cans are lined with a resin that contains synthetic estrogen, which is absorbed by acidic foods - like tomatoes – and is linked to heart disease, diabetes, obesity and reproductive problems. The fix: Buy tomatoes in glass bottles, or in boxes that aren’t lined with resin, like Pomi brand.
Then there’s the farmer who won’t eat corn-fed beef. Joel Salatan has written several books on sustainable farming. He says that cattle are designed to eat grass, but most farmers feed them corn and soybeans to fatten them up faster for slaughter. Salatan says that corn-fed beef has fewer vitamins and minerals, and more of the fats that cause inflammation and heart disease. The fix: Buy grass-fed beef at specialty stores and farmers’ markets.
Finally, the toxicologist won’t eat microwave popcorn. Dr. Olga Naidenko is a senior scientist for the Environmental Working Group. She says that popcorn bags are lined with chemicals that vaporize and settle on the corn when it pops, chemicals that stay in your body for years, and are linked to infertility, and cancers of the liver and pancreas. The fix: Pop natural popcorn kernels in an old-fashioned skillet.
